SPARR — North Marion High School canceled a few home sporting events on Wednesday afternoon after a possible sinkhole was discovered on the baseball field.

The hole, which officials are calling a “depression” pending further investigation, is near a sprinkler head in left field.

Robert Knight, supervisor of facilities, said school safety officials will dig into the ground near the hole Thursday to see if it is a full-blown sinkhole. If it is, Knight said, the district may have to order a geological survey of the area.

Because of the unknown nature of the hole, and not knowing how far underground it may go, North Marion also canceled the softball game on a nearby field.
