Kinsler captures state Miss Weightlifting

Jessica Kinsler, Gainesville High's two-time girls weightlifting state champion in the 154-pound division, was recently named Miss Weightlifting by the Florida Dairy Farmers.

Kinsler, a junior, won her latest state title a month ago in Kissimmee with a 225-pound bench press and a clean-and-jerk lift of 175 pounds for a 400-pound total. Her bench press broke her own state record (210) set last year, and her total was the highest of any class outside unlimited, winning division by 60 pounds over her nearest competitor.

“I never knew about this award until I got it,” said Kinsler, whose younger sister Janice placed fourth at state (129 class). “I knew I could win state again and make my coach proud. I did it for me, my family and my coaches.”

Kinsler was 10 pounds of the state record for her weight class set in 2009.

- The Florida High School Athletic Association announced its winter season academic team champions for 2013, and our area had three schools that did well: boys basketball: St. Francis (Class 3A) 3.450 (cumulative GPA); girls basketball: Fort White (4A) 3.342, St. Francis (3A) 3.504; boys soccer: Eastside (3A) 3.654 (top GPA), St. Francis (1A) 3.337; girls soccer: Eastside (3A) 3.519.

- Former Columbia High swimmer Heather Burns of Florida Southern set a meet record in winning the 1,000-yard freestyle race at the Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championships last month in Clearwater. She also placed sixth in the 1,650 free and ninth in the 500 free. She was a member of the 800 free relay team that placed third with a school-record time. Burns qualified to swim at this week's NCAA Division II meet in Birmingham, Ala.

- In the Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Soccer and Boys' Soccer Coach of the Year, Buchholz coach Andy Aulick, who led the Bobcats to their first state semifinal, finished runner-up in Class 5A to Juan Ramos of state-champion Weston Cypress Bay. Senior forward Eric West placed third in the class for player of the year. In Class 1A, sophomore striker Jose Diaz, who led the area in goals, finished third in player-of-the-year voting.

- The Florida Athletic Coaches Association, in alliance with STANNO USA, will hold a All-Star Boys Soccer Classic on March 8-9 at the University of South Florida in Tampa. The four teams consists of senior standouts from around the state, with Buchholz coach Andy Aulick as one of the North coaches. Also on the North team are Eric West and John Schratt of Buchholz, and Lafayette's Nick Singletary.

- Former Oak Hall softball standout Taylor King recently returned to Florida as a member of the No. 5 Texas Longhorns this week at the Citrus Classic Tournament. Texas (19-3) played five games during the week.
