Most everyone hates Congress. At least since Mark Twain, we have made fun of it. Twain once said: "Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself." Will Rogers made fun of Congress, too.
We need to stop complaining about our representatives. The fact is, when you get to the bottom line, we get the Congress that we deserve. We get the state representatives that we deserve. We get the Governors and the President we deserve. If we want better, we need to do our homework, really study and learn about the issues and stop being so lazy.
We need to pay attention and vote in primaries, whether we are Republicans or Democrats. We need to know what the candidates really stand for and not just listen to catchy sound bites that say that government is too big or too small, that poor people are just takers, or that we need to tax the rich more. We need to study economics and government and history.
Then, we can elect people who won't be so stupid, corrupt and lazy themselves. And only then will we really get government of the people, by the people and for the people. Until then, we need to put up or shut up.
George L. Barnett lives in Micanopy.
