Eight bus routes will be halted over the summer

Eight Regional Transit System bus routes will not be in service over the summer, RTS announced in a meeting at GRU's downtown office Wednesday night.
The meeting was arranged specifically to discuss changes being made to summer 2013 bus routes.
No summer service will be available for routes 22, 27, 28, 29, 39, 46, 62 and 76, RTS announced. These are primarily new routes, and even though their ridership is satisfactory currently, there isn't enough demand to keep them running all year, said Chief Transit Planner Douglas Robinson.
The changes will take place starting May 6.
"In order to keep services efficient, and to keep the productivity and number of services per hour, there has generally been a consensus that we need to reduce multiple routes," Robinson said.
A time change was proposed for routes 1, 5, 8, 9, 12, 13, 16, 17 and 20 to all end their run at 11 p.m.
Other routes have specific changes to their end time: Route 21, 5:50 p.m.; Route 23, 10 p.m.; Route 34, 11 p.m.; Route 35, 11 p.m.; Route 36, 6:05 p.m.; Route 38, 5:15 p.m. and Route 43, 7:13 p.m.
Robinson said there will be no change in fares, although RTS is looking into new revenue and farebox upgrades in the future. A public hearing concerning those proposals has been set for March 21.
RTS also has proposed a new route that has been approved by the University of Florida. Robinson said route 41 will be a northern extension of route 29 and will begin running in August.
The reduction in bus routes will not affect employment for bus drivers, Robinson said. During the summer months, drivers can take vacations, work with special assignments, help out in offices, clean buses and be assigned to a route maintenance program designed to train drivers to learn other functions.
"That's a program we're really proud of because it gives drivers an opportunity to become dispatchers and supervisors, and to work in the administrative office," Robinson said.
