Battery and child abuse charges were filed against a Gainesville man accused of beating his girlfriend and fleeing from police at high speeds with his son in his car.

Eric C. White, 31, of 1710 NE First Ave., was arrested Monday afternoon, according to a Gainesville Police Department report.

Police said White and his girlfriend were arguing in and outside of their car and White allegedly punched her several times in the face.

The two separated, and White drove off with the couple’s 4-year-old son. A police officer spotted the car and tried to pull White over, the report states. However, he made a U-turn and sped away.

Police reported that White pulled into a driveway and ran. He was caught by police. Officers found the youngster in the car without being in a child seat or having his seat belt engaged.
