The Lake City Police Department has earned accreditation from a state board that examines the standards, policies and procedures of law enforcement agencies.
The Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation notified Chief Argatha Gilmore last week that the department has earned accreditation through an intense review process that began in 2010.
The CFA has nearly 266 standards that cover topics such as training, use of force, operations, investigations and the written directive system.
On Feb. 21, Gilmore and accreditation manager Steve Shaw went before the CFA to field questions about the police department, after which the CFA unanimously agreed to approve the accreditation.
“It is a major accomplishment for our department to achieve accredited status,’’ Gilmore said in a news release.
“We can say how good we are, but when a state law enforcement community of professionals has examined your department and indicated your department has met the professional standards to becoming a premier agency, it is an awesome feeling,’’ she said.
