A Lake City man has died after he was struck by a car while walking along State Road 247 Saturday evening, according to a report.

Matthew E. Jones, 32, was walking north on the shoulder of the road just south of Southwest Monk Way around 5:25 p.m. picking up aluminum cans to recycle. A northbound Toyota Camry, driven by 28-year-old Amanda Gail Gibson, also of Lake City, inadvertently allowed her vehicle to drift to the right, where it left the road and hit Jones, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Gibson’s vehicle was traveling at or around “normal” highway speeds when her vehicle struck Jones, the FHP said.

Jones was flown to Shands at the University of Florida, where he died Saturday around 11:30 p.m., the FHP reported.
