Three area boys teams advance to state tourney

Three area boys basketball teams captured regional titles Saturday night and are advancing to this week's state tournament in Lakeland.

Gainesville (21-9), a 56-55 upset winner over No. 1 Orlando Edgewater, moves onto the Class 6A state semifinals. The Hurricanes will play defending state champion and No. 3 Miami Norland (24-5) on Thursday at noon at The Lakeland Center. The other 6A state semifinal pits No. 2 Pensacola Pine Forest (29-1) against Winter Haven (21-10) at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.

In Class 1A, defending state runner-up Hawthorne (28-1) and Union County (17-12) both return to Lakeland and will play in different state semifinals Tuesday morning. Union County will take on No. 3 West Gadsden (24-8) at 10 a.m., followed by the Hornets facing Holmes County (18-8) at 11:30. The Blue Devils, a 55-47 upset winner over No. 2 Malone, are led by 6-foot-10 power forward Chris Walker, a UF signee and McDonald's All-American.
