Couple purchases Big Frog Custom T-shirts franchise

David and Tami Wise of Old Town recently purchased a Big Frog Custom T-shirts franchise. The store is located in the Esplanade at Butler Plaza, 3232 SW 35th Blvd. Big Frog Custom T-shirts is a franchise company based in Clearwater that specializes in direct-to-garment print technology.

Gia Arvin, a broker-associate with Matchmaker Realty, was recently announced to be the 2013 District 1 vice president of Florida Realtors. District 1 encompasses 13 counties, including Alachua. Arvin is a member of the Gainesville-Alachua County Association of Realtors and has previously served as the 2011 president of the Gainesville association, the district vice president of the Women's Council of Realtors and as a director of the state association.

North Central Florida YMCA board President Danny Gilliland and CEO John Bonacci recently announced the creation of an Emeritus Board to recognize the many years of service to the YMCA of the seven founding members: Jeff Childers, Rusty Daugherty, Eric Kraft, Dick Mahaffey, Ed Newmans, Mark Thompson and Doug Wilcox.

In addition, the YMCA Board of Directors has recently announced the addition of the following new board members: Shaun Buford, Pam Burns, John Bunting, Roland Denault, Catherine Divingian, Larry Hartfield, Gil Levy, Joe Lowery Sr., Andy Wilcox and William Wright.

Sarah Carey, UF College of Veterinary Medicine's director of public relations, was recently named the 2012 John S. Detweiler Professional of the Year by the Gainesville chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association.

Carey attended Duke University and Florida State University, where she received her Master of Arts in creative writing, and she received her accreditation in public relations in 1996.

Carey worked as an editor for a weekly newspaper and a trade magazine before beginning her career with the UF College of Veterinary Medicine in 1990.

The National Science Foundation recently selected University of Florida engineering professor Pramod P. Khargonekar to serve as assistant director for the Directorate of Engineering.

Khargonekar, who will retain his position at UF, is currently the deputy director for technology at the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy and is the Eckis Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UF.

From 2001 to 2009, Khargonekar served as the dean of the University of Florida's College of Engineering.
