ORLANDO — Nyala Shuler scored 15 of her 20 points in the first half and finished with a double-double as Orlando Edgewater, the reigning Class 6A state champions, knocked off Gainesville 78-62 in the Region 2 final Saturday.

Trimaine McCullough finished with 21 points despite foul trouble, and Haley Clark added 18 for Edgewater (24-6), which pulled away from a 17-17 first-quarter tie. Shuler also had 13 rebounds.

Gainesville (26-2), which had won 12 straight games coming in, trailed 42-28 at the half and 61-37 heading into the fourth period.

“It was a hard loss, they shot well from the 3-point line,” said Hurricane coach David Gordon, who has led GHS to two straight regional finals, both ending at Edgewater. “They were knocking down contested shots.

“At first, we didn't play very well and in the second half we had a little more energy and played a little better. When you are down by 20, it is hard to come back against a team like that. We had a very successful season. We just didn't accomplish all we wanted to do.”

Gainesville (26-2) was led by Jacksonville signee De'ja McPhee with 21 points.

Edgewater will play Miami Norland in a state semifinal Thursday.
