4 things of note in area sports
-In girls basketball, seven of the eight defending state champions are still alive heading into Saturday's regional finals. Only P.K. Yonge, the defending Class 3A champion, fell in the regional semifinals at Daytona Beach Father Lopez (62-60). The defending state champions that did advance are: Orlando Dr. Phillips (8A); Sebastian River (7A); Orlando Edgewater (6A); Fort Lauderdale Dillard (5A); Fort Myers Dunbar (4A); Tallahassee Florida A&M (2A) and Ponce de Leon (1A). The FHSAA Finals, held at The Lakeland Center, begin Feb. 19. Prior to this season, P.K. Yonge had won two state titles in three years.
-Former Blue Wave great Niya Johnson, a McDonald's All-American who led P.K. Yonge to the state 3A title last year and was a big part of the state 2A state title team of 2010, has played in every one of No. 1 Baylor's 24 games this season, averaging 14 minutes per contest and 1.8 points. The Bears (23-1), who lost their third game of the season against Stanford in Hawaii by 2 (71-69), have won 21 straight heading into Sunday's home game against TCU.
-Sixteen wrestlers from the area, including seven from Gainesville, qualified for Saturday's FHSAA Finals at The Lakeland Center. Qualifiers from Gainesville High are Trae-von O'Neil (106-pound class), Jon Gardner (120, regional champion), Matt Tamayo (132),Thomas Herlevich (145), and Wade Jones (170). Deontrae Neil of Buchholz (285, regional champion) and Eastside's Rashaad Bennett (120) also qualified from Gainesville. Other area wrestlers competing are four from Suwannee in Dean Shingola (120), Phillip Marco (126), Shawn Brown (145) and Logan Fletcher (160); three from Columbia in Cole Schreiber (113), Kaleb Warner (126) and Daniel Devers (160); and two from Bradford in Jarraid Forsythe (145) and Phillip James (195).
-Miami Central football coach Teddy Lockett was a finalist to be the running backs coach at the University of Miami. Head coach Al Golden ultimately moved defensive coach Hurlie Brown to offense and into that position. Central beat Gainesville High for the 6A state title in December.
