4 things of note in area sports
■ Josh Crow recently resigned as volleyball coach at Eastside after two seasons. Crow, 34, was hired in December 2010, replacing Eddie Maynard who left to take the volleyball position at Gainesville after longtime coach Cindy Boulware stepped down. Crow, who has also been a volleyball coach at Gainesville Athletic Club, led the Rams to back-to-back Class 5A regional semifinals. Eastside athletic director Mike Monaghan is taking applications for the position.
■ Former Oak Hall football standout Leon Cummings, who did postgraduate work at Salisbury Prep School in Salisbury, Conn., signed this week with Marist College, a Division-I school in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Cummings, a first-team all-area player from the Eagles' 8-3 season in 2011, ran for 1,145 yards with 16 TDs and also had 36 receptions for 436 yards and three TDs during his senior year.
■ Eastside has announced it will host the second Sarah M. Landauer Memorial Lacrosse Invitational and 5K on March 1-2. This year's field will consist of 11 schools from around the state, including the Panhandle, Space Coast, Jacksonville, Orlando, Ocala and Gainesville. The tournament will feature four games March 1 and with 12 games scheduled on March 2, preceded by the SMiLe 5K. Proceeds will benefit the Sarah M. Landauer University of Florida Memorial Soccer Endowment. For more information regarding the endowment, go to www.sarahlandauer.org. ■ In the latest FABC-SourceHoops basketball poll, Newberry (19-6) has moved up to No. 2 in Class 1A. The Panthers, Final Four participants a year ago, will host Crescent City in next Tuesday's regional semifinals. Also ranked locally are: P.K.
