Eastside advances past St. Johns Creekside

JACKSONVILLE — Sophomore A’nikeyawna Barber scored 12 points and senior Jurnee Pettigrew added 11 as Eastside held off St. Johns Creekside, 42-37, Thursday in the Class 5A, Region 2 quarterfinals in girls basketball.
With the victory, the Rams (13-11) advance to their third regional semifinal since 2009 and will play at St. Johns Bartram Trail (20-7) on Tuesday.
The Bears upset No. 3 Palatka on the road, 61-57.
Eastside had built a 22-13 lead at the half, but the Knights tried to rally back in the second half. Barber hit 6 of 7 free throws in the fourth to clinch the victory for the Rams. Eastside had lost to Palatka in the District 6 final last week, 35-30.
RUTHERFORD 62, SUWANNEE 36: Junior Daydia Bandy scored 23 of the Bulldogs points as Suwannee was dominated from the start, ending its season at 4-20.
It was the Bulldogs’ third regional playoff appearance in the last four years. Suwannee hasn’t won a playoff game since 2010. Marsheba Addison led the Rams with 20 points.
