Class 5A, Region 1
Who: Oviedo (16-1-3) at Buchholz (17-1-4)
Where: Jonesville Complex
How they got here: Buchholz def. Jacksonville Mandarin 1-0 in the regional semifinals, def. Port Orange Spruce Creek 2-0 in the regional quarterfinals; Oviedo def. Orlando Timber Creek 1-0 in overtime in the regional semifinals, def. Orlando Cypress Creek 2-1 in the regional quarterfinals.
What's next: Buchholz would travel to Winter Garden West Orange or Tarpon Springs East Lake in Saturday's state semifinals; Oviedo would also travel to either West Orange or East Lake.
Free kick: The host Bobcats, ranked No. 4 nationally by MaxPreps, are in their first regional final since 2001. The visiting Lions, ranked No. 21 nationally, are in their first regional final since 2000. Neither school has advanced to the state semifinals.That stat will change after this game. Buchholz is led by senior forward Eric West, who has a team-leading 17 goals and 11 assists, including one on Saturday against Mandarin. Junior Diego Fisher and senior Louis Allen each have 10 goals on the season. Allen had the Bobcats' lone goal in the regional semifinal. Buchholz, which prides itself on defense, has allowed just 17 goals in 22 games, and junior goalkeeper Hunter Patrick has had back-to-back shutouts in the postseason. Junior forward Jonathan Coleman scored the only goal on a penalty kick in OT as the Lions beat Timber Creek on Saturday. Oviedo, which has only five seniors, was a surprising 4-0 loser at home to Lake Howell in the District 3 final. That loss cost the Lions a home date in this round while the Bobcats are playing their third straight playoff game at Jonesville Complex.
Class 3A, Region 2
Who: Land O'Lakes Sunlake (29-0) at Eastside (22-2-2), Citizens Field
How they got here: Eastside def. Inverness Citrus 2-0 in the regional semifinals, def. Leesburg 4-1 in the regional quarterfinals; Sunlake def. Dade City Paso 2-0 in the regional semifinals, def. New Port Richey Mitchell 4-2 in the regional quarterfinals
What's next: Eastside would host Ponte Vedra or travel to Choctawhatchee in Saturday's state semifinals; Sunlake would host either school.
Free kick: Eastside has reached the regional finals for the second straight season, and for the second straight season, will see a talented Pasco County team. Last season the Rams were shut out at home, 5-0, to Land O'Lakes. Sophomores Joseph Malu and Tyler Miller-Jones accounted for both of Eastside's goals in its win at Citrus. Malu has scored six goals in the last three matches and has a team-leading 24 on the season. Miller-Jones has 22 goals and junior Alex Fethiere has 15. Seahawks senior forward Connor Gilboy set a Pasco County record for goals in a season with 60, surpassing a mark that stood for 13 years. Sunlake, which opened in 2007, is making its second regional final appearance in three years.
Class 1A, Region 2
Who: Lafayette (16-5) at Maitland Orangewood Christian (17-5-1)
How they got here: Lafayette def. Tallahassee Maclay 4-1 in the regional semifinals, def. Eastpoint Franklin County 5-0 in the regional quarterfinals; Orangewood Christian def. St. Augustine St. Joseph 1-0 (3-2 penalty kicks) in the regional semifinals, def. Jacksonville Christ's Church Academy 5-0 in the regional quarterfinals.
What's next: Lafayette would travel to Windermere Prep or Tampa Prep in Saturday's state semifinals; Orangewood Christian would also travel to Windermere Prep or Tampa Prep.
Free kick: This is the second straight season Lafayette has advanced to the regional finals. Before 2012, the Hornets were 0-3 in playoff appearances. Hornet sophomore striker Jose Diaz, who scored two goals in Saturday's win over Maclay, leads the area with 38 goals, and junior Ismeal Moreno has 19 goals and 25 assists. Goalkeeper Ben Overbeek had 12 saves in the Rams' win over St. Joseph
