A fatal accident snarled early morning traffic at the intersection of Waldo Road and East University Avenue, according to police.
Gainesville Police Department spokesman Officer Ben Tobias said the crash happened around 5:26 a.m. and involved a semi-truck and a small passenger car. Police received multiple 911 calls about the incident.
The sole occupant of the car — Tyler Clayton Gaultney, 31, of 731 SW 226 St. in Newberry — died on scene, Tobias said.
A truck hauling an empty log trailer was headed north toward the intersection, Tobias said, and Gaultney’s Ford Taurus was going west on University. Police say Gaultney ran a red light and collided with the semi.
The semi, driven by Larry Windle, 68, couldn’t stop in time and hit Gaultney’s car on the driver’s side. Gaultney was not wearing a seat belt, Tobias said, and was ejected from the vehicle. He was found dead in the roadway by police, Tobias said.
At one point, all four directions of the intersection were closed. Roads reopened around 9:30 a.m.
