An SUV burst into flames near the corner of Archer and Tower roads on Saturday afternoon but no one was hurt in the fire.

The owner of a blue Ford Expedition was driving near the intersection at around 1 p.m. Saturday when she smelled something burning, said Lt. Kurt Brooker of the Alachua County Fire Rescue. She pulled off the road and stopped near Park Lane apartments, behind the Archer Road-Tower Road intersection, Brooker said.

The driver left the vehicle and soon the Expedition was fully engulfed in flames. ACFR firefighters arrived within minutes to extinguish the flames, a witness said.

The fire was probably mechanical and started in the engine, said Brooker.
