Man, 22, charged with robbery

A man was arrested on suspicion of stealing a woman’s wallet, repeatedly knocking her to the ground and stealing her wallet Monday night, Gainesville police said.

Michael C. Shade, 22, was charged with robbery and hindering communication with law enforcement, according to an Gainesville Police Department report.

The incident happened at 6:45 p.m. in the 3100 block of Southwest 24th Place. The woman had was getting off the bus when she noticed that Shade, who was in front of her, had her wallet and some papers.

The arrest report states that she confronted him and he slapped her. She chased him and began calling 911 on her cellphone. Shade reportedly slapped it to the ground and smashed it. The woman told police she was knocked down a couple of times while confronting him.

Police received an anonymous call that the culprit had entered a nearby apartment. A woman in the apartment said Shade has been there earlier. Police found some of the victim’s documents inside.

Shade later turned himself in. The arrest report states he told police he had a confrontation with the woman but denied stealing her wallet. He acknowledged going to the apartment of the witness and leaving some items there.

The woman was not injured beyond some bumps and bruises, GPD Lt. Jorge Campos said.
