UF women's tennis tested on first day in Las Vegas

<p>LAS VEGAS — Florida's Alexandra Cercone, Danielle Collins, Olivia Janowicz and Brianna Morgan each were involved in lengthy first-round singles matches in the opening round of play at the 11th Annual Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships on the UNLV campus.</p><p> All four found themselves in three-set matches, but only Cercone managed to capture the victory, defeating North Carolina's Laura Slater, 0-6, 7-5, 6-2. The Gator junior advanced to the round of 16 where she fell to top-seeded and second-ranked Krista Hardebeck of Stanford, 6-2, 6-1.</p><p> Collins lost to Oregon's Patricia Skowronski, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, Janowicz fell to UCLA's Chanelle Van Nguyen 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 and Morgan dropped a 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 decision to UNC's Kate Vialle.</p><p> Janowicz rallied in her first-round consolation match with a 6-3, 6-0 win over UNLV's Iren Kotesva, while Collins outlasted UNLV's Nives Pavlovic , 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-4). Morgan drew a bye.</p><p> In doubles action, the Gator pair of Collins and Janowicz downed UNLV's .Aleksandra Josifoska and Iren Kotseva, 8-3, but Cercone and Morgan fell to UCLA's third-seeded Pamela Montez and Courtney Dolehide 8-5.</p><p>Action continues on Saturday at 10 a.m. PST.</p>
