4 things of note in area sports
-The annual city championship wrestling meet will be held at Eastside on Friday at 6 p.m. Gainesville High, under the direction of coach Ryland Wagner, will be aiming for its third straight city title and its eighth in nine years.
-P.K. Yonge leads the Class 3A/2A public group category following fall sports competition in the 2012-13 FHSAA Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Awards point standings. Other area teams ranked in their respective classes include: Buchholz (4th in Class 7A); Gainesville (4th in Class 6A); Columbia (8th in Class 6A); Santa Fe (four-way tie for 8th in Class 4A Public); Oak Hall (10th in Class 3A Private); Lafayette (2nd in Class 1A); Trenton (4th in Class 1A); Newberry (tied for 6th in Class 1A).
-The Eastside girls cross country team, which qualified for state for the second straight season, finished second in the FHSAA Academic Team standings in Class 2A with a 3.993 grade point average. The Rams boys swimming and diving team, Class 2A Academic Team champions last year, placed second this time with a 3.585 GPA. Other area teams that were ranked in their respective sports for consideration were: Cedar Key girls cross country (5th in Class 1A, 3.816 GPA); St. Francis girls cross county (11th in Class 1A, 3.698 GPA); Eastside boys cross country (4th in Class 2A, 3.771 GPA); St. Francis boys cross country (16th in Class 2A, 3.416 GPA); St. Francis football (5th in Class 2A, 3.001 GPA); Eastside boys golf (10th in Class 1A, 3.604 GPA); Eastside girls golf (11th in Class 1A, 3.673 GPA); Eastside girls swimming (6th in Class 2A, 3.606 GPA); St. Francis girls swimming (5th in Class 1A, 3.739 GPA); St. Francis volleyball (10th in Class 3A, 3.598 GPA); Lafayette girls volleyball (4th in Class 1A, 3.421 GPA).
-Former Newberry and Santa Fe football coach Tommy Keeler received the Dub Palmer Lifetime Achievement Award at last Saturday's Florida Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame ceremony in Daytona Beach. The award is given out to a retiring football coach each year. Keeler, who retired from 30 years of coaching and teaching last May, now works for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Keeler guided Newberry to the 2007 Class 2B state championship game and ended a seven-year playoff drought for Santa Fe as the Raiders made the postseason in 2011, which was his only season in Alachua.
