The City Commission workshop on the Gainesville biomass plant and power purchase contract begins at 4 p.m. Wednesday and could last well into the night.

The workshop was scheduled as part of a settlement agreement with Gainesville Citizens CARE, an anti-biomass group that filed a lawsuit seeking to have the city’s contract with the power plant declared void.

The settlement, which commissioners narrowly approved 4-3, requires that Gainesville Citizens CARE be granted a minimum of four hours to make a presentation at a televised meeting. Other members of the public will also be allowed to speak.

The meeting is expected to last several hours. Last Thursday, almost a week before the meeting, the City Commission voted to waive its rules in order to allow the workshop to continue beyond 11 p.m.
