A man said to be diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder was arrested Thursday by Gainesville police on allegations he choked his wife and threatened her with a knife after she intervened because he was cutting himself.

The 25-year-old Gainesville man was charged with four felonies -- domestic battery by strangulation, aggravated assault, kidnapping or false imprisonment and hindering communication with law enforcement -- and misdemeanor battery, the Gainesville Police Department reported.

On Thursday night, the man’s wife called 911 to report the incident. Police reported that the man began cutting himself with a kitchen knife and, when his wife tried to intervene, he attacked her.

The man is accused of choking her, threatening her with the knife and smashing her cellphone when she tried to call 911. He was booked early Friday morning into the Alachua County jail, where he remained Friday in lieu of $22,500 bond.
