Gas prices have ticked up slightly as 2012 comes to a close, according to AAA.

Nationwide, the average price for regular gas rose nearly five cents to $3.29. In Florida, the price rose about eight cents to $3.36.

But future prices could hinge on the "fiscal cliff" of tax hikes and spending cuts set for Jan. 1, an economic crisis being addressed by Congress.

An analysis from the auto club finds that gas will likely rise if Congress and the president get a deal. If the country goes over the cliff, prices may decline, as they have recent months.

"If the fiscal cliff is not avoided and the economy falls back into a recession, we’re sure to see gas prices drop as fuel demand recedes," AAA spokeswoman Jessica Brady said in a news release. "If a plan is put into place, gas prices will likely continue to increase throughout January, however it’s doubtful we will see an immediate spike in fuel demand.” showed prices in Gainesville ranging from $3.35 to $3.69.
