Every year, Sun editors look back at the stories and images that made news over the prior 12 months and select those that stand out. It is, by far, one of the hardest exercises in editing.
Capturing the images that lead the news of the day is a perennial challenge. Access to a scene, timing, issues of sensitivity, deadlines and a host of other obstacles stand between a photographer and the photo that finally makes it to print — which is why it is so difficult to cull from thousands of photos to create a collection that defines a year.
Photo editor Rob Witzel and staff photographers, Erica Brough, Doug Finger, Brad McClenny and Matt Stamey have gathered the images that captured the events in 2012 and that together speak volumes about the community we share.
From tragic and poignant to heartwarming and bucolic, the images here were chosen for their visual impact and the piece of local history they represent.
