SILVER SPRINGS SHORES - A woman was taken to a hospital with critical injuries Saturday when the motorcycle she was riding plowed into the front of a Silver Springs Shores house, according to Florida Highway Patrol troopers.
Authorities said Maria Luz Ausua-Vega, 20, was riding a blue Yamaha YZ 85 on Pine Close when she failed to stop at the intersection of Pine Close and Cedar Road, crossed Cedar Road and traveled onto a front lawn before crashing into the side of a house, mere inches from the front door.
Homeowner Hope Fernandez, who works nights, told a Star-Banner reporter on scene that she was asleep when she heard a loud motorcycle noise and then a "thud."
Fernandez said she opened the front door and saw a woman lying against her home, slumped over. The rider was not wearing a helmet, Fernandez said.
The woman said a man, later identified as the boyfriend of the injured woman, showed up and removed his girlfriend from against the home and laid her on the front lawn, while a bystander saw what was happening and called 911.
Fernandez said she felt for a pulse and got one, but that it was faint.
Emergency personnel arrived on scene and transported Ausua-Vega to Ocala Regional Medical Center with critical injuries.
Troopers investigating the crash said speed was a factor.
The crash left a small hole in Fernandez's front wall.
Officials don't know what caused the crash.
