Three flu clinics will be conducted at the Alachua County Health Department, located at 224 SE 24th St., between now and mid-January.

The first clinic is set for Thursday from 8:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. A second clinic is planned for Jan. 15 from 8:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m., and the third is set for Jan. 16 during those same hours.

Alachua County school-aged children can get the nasal FluMist vaccine for free. Health Department clients can get the flu shot for fre,e and non-clients can get the flu shot for $25 (many insurance plans cover the cost).

The Health Department urges children and adults to get the seasonal flu vaccine and to take precautions to limit their risk of exposure to seasonal flu. Compared with most other viral respiratory infections, such as the common cold, flu infections often cause a more severe illness.

"The most effective precautions we can use to fight illness are getting vaccinated before flu season and practicing good hygiene," said Anthony Dennis, environmental health director for the Health Department.
