Gainesville's new economic development and innovation director comes from within the city's ranks.

On Thursday, City Manager Russ Blackburn announced the hiring of Planning and Development Services Director Eric Bredfeldt in that role.

In a press release, Blackburn said that, after a national candidate search, Bredfeldt was "the best fit for the city organization."

In 2003, Bredfeldt was initially hired as the city's economic development director. He has been the director of the Planning and Development Services Department for five years. Bredfeldt will continue to serve as interim director until a city building official and planning and development services director are hired.

Bredfeldt has a bachelor's in economics from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa., and master's and doctorate degrees in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Florida.

He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and has National Development Council certification as an Economic Development Finance Professional.
