Godfather's closes; Roundabout Bar opens; Maui Teriyaki site for sale

Godfather's Pizza has closed after 33 years at 1405 NW 23rd Ave. in Verde Plaza.

The business was dark on Dec. 11. The owners did not return calls for comment.

Betsy Whitaker, who handles leasing for the plaza, said the property owner indicated business was having some challenges.

"A few months ago the owner was saying there might be a problem and we might have to find a new tenant," she said. "It seemed to work itself out. Then I got a text message that they were no longer in the space."

Roundabout Bar and Grill

The Roundabout Bar and Grill opened Dec. 2 after renovating the former O!O Tapas and Tinis location and adding a large bar separated from the restaurant at 2725 SW 91st St. in Haile Publix Market Square.

The full-service restaurant is open every day for lunch and dinner. It features live music and has large-screen TVs for watching sports.

The menu includes seafood, salads, burgers, flatbreads and steaks with sandwiches starting at $6.90, burgers at $9.90 and entrees ranging from $12.90 to $23.90.

Appetizers include buffalo chicken spring rolls; and jalapeno, bacon and cream cheese fritters. Entree highlights include a chicken pot pie, vegetable stir fry, sea scallops, goat cheese chicken and a tempeh burger.

Maui Teriyaki

The owner of the Maui Teriyaki at 3105 SW 34th St. has put the building up for sale and says she will relocate the business if she gets a good offer.

Nikita Patalinghug bought the building for $1.2 million in 2010 but lost half her mortgage payment when Hungry Howie's moved out of its part of the building in June 2011. With so many nearby vacancies, she said she could not come close to landing a tenant for the $7,000 in monthly rent she had been receiving.

She said Golden Corral was looking at buying the building and tear it down but would also need to acquire another adjacent property to make the deal work with the space they would need.

In the meantime, Patalinghug plans to open a catering business and drive-through window in the former Hungry Howie's space. If the drive-through does well, she said she will pull the building off of the market. If it does not do well and she can sell the building, she said she would like to move Maui Teriyaki closer to campus.
