A Suwannee County school bus with 48 students was hit from behind Wednesday morning, sending all students to the hospital as a precaution while the driver who hit the bus was hospitalized in serious condition, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred about 7:35 a.m. on U.S. 90 at 74th Street, the FHP reported.
The bus was eastbound on U.S. 90 and stopped at the intersection with is warning lights engaged while children were boarding, FHP reported.
Brandon J. Cunningham, 18, of Live Oak, also was eastbound on U.S. 90 in a 2002 Chevrolet SUV. Cunningham failed to slow and hit the back of the bus.
Cunningham was flown by helicopter to Shands at the University of Florida with serious injuries. FHP said the 48 students — from elementary to high school age — were taken to Shands at Live Oak as a precautionary measure.
