Dozens of Gainesville High School students stood in the chilly mist to send off their football team as the squad boarded buses to head to Orlando for the 6A state championship game against Miami Central on Saturday.
The marching band played cheers in the school's courtyard while the players, led by cheerleaders, were met with high-fives, hugs and the occasional kiss from a girl.
Some players recorded their walk on their cellphones. Some wore their letterman jackets. Some seemed focused amid the crowd's fervor, wearing headphones, sunglasses and carrying pads and cleats.
All dressed in Hurricane purple.
Darrin Jones, assistant principal and a GHS graduate, said students have been buzzing with anticipation all week.
"It's an exciting time for the whole community," he said.
Aliciontaye Wilson, 18, said she felt confident about Saturday's game.
"I know that we're going to win," she said.
