The cupcakes from "A Party for One Cupcakes & Sweet Treats" may look too pretty to eat, but go ahead and take a bite anyway.
"Our intention is that the food has to taste as good as it looks," said Tyran Butler, who, along with Erica McCray, are the owners of A Party for One and the creators of baked goodies that include cupcakes, Bundt cakes, cookies, cake pops and edible images.
Both Butler and McCray are full-time educators with a passion for baking and creating treats people will enjoy. Butler is director of education programs at Santa Fe College and McCray is an assistant professor of special education at the University of Florida. Butler is married to Alvin Butler, a mental health counselor and an award-winning Alachua County cattleman. They have two daughters, 23-month-old Alivia and 23-year-old Sasha. McCray has one daughter, 13-year-old Brittany.
"We share a love for good food and we consider ourselves better than good cooks," said Butler, adding that cooking is a hobby that turned into a business in August 2011.
The menu includes 15 cupcake flavors, such as Oreo Flirt with vanilla cake and chocolate butter cream frosting, Peanut Butter Cup with chocolate cake and peanut butter cream frosting and Florida Snowball with coconut cake and creamy frosting and coconut.
Cupcakes range in price from $20 for two-dozen minis to $25 for one dozen standard and there are also edible decorations. The menu also features Bundt cakes, cookies and cake pops.
Free delivery is offered in the Gainesville area, but a delivery fee is added to locations outside of the area. "We're busy during the holidays," McCray said. "Let us know (your order) the sooner, the better."
Gainesville resident Elaine McCall said she serves A Party for One cupcakes at her events and they are always delightful and in great demand. For her daughter's wedding, McCall said Butler created cupcakes that fit together to look like a beautiful wedding cake. McCall said she can't decide on a favorite flavor because she likes them all, but her husband's favorite is Chocolate Addiction with chocolate cake and chocolate fudge frosting.
"I like them all," McCall said.
"The cupcakes are out of this world and beautiful — a delight for the eye."
Butler said she and McCray work well together. "I do the research and development," said McCray. "I have a sense for what people like," said Butler. "We're both creative."
Butler said for business advice they go to her husband, Alvin.
"People say these cupcakes are too pretty to eat, but they taste them and eat more," McCray said.
