Planting day in Porters

Gigi Simmons, left, president of the Porters Community Neighborhood Organization, and Coral MacDonald of Occupy Gainesville, volunteered to help plant the trees last Wednesday during a volunteer day at the farm. Chestnut Hill donated 20 apple, blueberry, nectarine and turkey fig trees.

Chestnut Hill Tree Farm in Alachua recently donated $500 worth of fruit and nut trees to the Porters Community Farm, which was established this fall on several vacant lots in the Porters community by Florida Organic Growers Inc.
