A McAlpin man was hospitalized with serious injuries Saturday afternoon when he drove into the path of an oncoming car while crossing an intersection in Suwannee County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Leroy Holmes, 78, was taken to Shands at the University of Florida following the accident, which occurred about 2:40 p.m. on County Road 49 at 180th Street, FHP reported in a press release.

Holmes was driving a 1985 Lincoln Town Car east on 180th Street, stopping at the intersection with CR-49, while William John Christensen, 51, of Live Oak, was southbound on CR-49 in a 2000 Ford Windstar, FHP reported.

According to witnesses, Holmes drove into the intersection directly into the path of the approaching Christensen. The front of the Windstar collided with the left side of the Town Car, the report states.

Christensen was taken to Shands at Live Oak with minor injuries, FHP stated. Charges are pending.
