A woman who police say left her children unattended while she went to a doughnut shop and the Gator City nightclub was arrested by Gainesville police on a child neglect charge early Tuesday morning, according to an arrest report.
Police responded to a call just after midnight by a neighbor who found Jessica Sanland’s 7-year-old child wandering by a swimming pool at the Villa Ravine Apartments at 1500 NW 16th Ave.
The child was screaming because of an earache, police said. Sanland’s 4-year-old child was found in the apartment.
Sanland, 27, returned home after being contacted by officers and smelled of alcohol, according to an arrest report. She told police she had gone to Dunkin’ Donuts and to Gator City, where she had a beer.
Police reported that two prescription pill containers, a bottle of cold medicine, a half empty beer can and a samurai sword were left within the children’s reach inside the apartment.
Sanland said she had let her oldest child stay home from school that day because the child wasn’t feeling well, but she didn’t provide medication, according to the report.
A caseworker with the Florida Department of Children and Families was called and decided to leave the children with a roommate when Sanland was arrested.
Records indicate that a similar incident with Sanland was reported in 2010, the arrest report states. The child in that case was found wandering outside her apartment in a diaper.
