A 44-year-old man died Monday evening after he was shot in the chest in a quiet neighborhood north of Gainesville, and Alachua County Sheriff’s deputies are searching for a suspect.

William Redd, of 2010 NE 192nd Ave., near the Monteocha area, was taken to Shands at the University of Florida following the 3:24 p.m. shooting, according to sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Todd Kelly.

He died a short time later, Kelly said.

Redd was on the lawn of the double-wide home when he was shot once in the upper chest, Kelly said. He went to the house and banged on the door, and family members inside called 911.

Witnesses reported that a black four-door sedan sped away on the dirt road on the dead-end street. They could not say how many people were in the vehicle, Kelly said.
