A 28-year-old man was arrested early Sunday after police said he attempted to steal a purse from a woman on SW 6th St.

According to a Gainesville Police report, Marcus Hathorn jumped out from some trees, grabbed the woman and choked her, taking her purse out of her hands. As police approached, Hathorn dropped the woman’s purse and ran into the woods.

The victim had minor scratches on her neck and was visibly shaken, police said.

Gainesville police tracked Hathorn with a K-9 officer and located him in the woods. Hathorn told police he ran into the woods because he was homeless and heard that the police did not like homeless people.

Hathorn was arrested on a charge of unarmed robbery.
