Howard Bishop Middle School’s cafeteria was burglarized Tuesday night, but no arrests have been made.
The school staff said it believes the culprit jimmied a cafeteria window on the south side of the school at 1901 NE Ninth St., while janitors were still cleaning the cafeteria sometime before 9:10 p.m., according to the Gainesville Police Department.
The burglar then smashed through a large pane of glass to access the cafeteria office and found the cafeteria safe key, police said. After stealing $700 from the safe, the culprit closed the safe and repositioned some of the broken glass, said police spokesman Officer Ben Tobias.
The last janitor left the school at 9:10 p.m. and set the alarm for the entire school, Tobias said.
The school staff said it believes the incidence to be an inside job and believes the culprit had knowledge of the cafeteria’s layout, according to police.
Prints were obtained at the window, and school staff provided the names of potential suspects. The case is still under investigation.
