A Gainesville man has been charged with felony sexual assault after police say he raped a friend in a park over the weekend.

Joe Van Scott Jenkins, 19, of 622 Queens Road, was arrested Sunday, according to a Gainesville Police Department arrest report.

Jenkins and the victim were walking around 3:30 p.m. Sunday from The Oaks Mall to Cofrin Park at 4810 NW Eighth Ave., the report said, when Jenkins assaulted the victim.

Two witnesses caught Jenkins in the act, and he ran from the scene, GPD spokesman Ben Tobias said, after the victim pleaded with the witnesses for assistance.

“The victim approached with tears in his eyes and said the suspect was raping him and they should call the cops,” Tobias said, adding that Jenkins yelled “he made me do it” as he ran off.

When police arrived, the victim told officers he and Jenkins had been friends for “a few years.”

After his arrest, Jenkins told an officer the victim threatened to say Jenkins raped him if Jenkins did not have sex with him. He said that’s why he assaulted the victim -- out of fear. The report said Jenkins denied raping the victim and said he felt raped by the victim.

After his arrest, Jenkins was booked into the Alachua County jail, where he remained Monday in lieu of a $20,000 bond.
