A Mayo man was hospitalized with serious injuries early Saturday morning when the pickup truck in which he was a passenger crashed to avoid hitting a deer, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Taken to Shands at Live Oak was Charles A. Williams, 31. The driver, Garrett G. Land, 26, of Mayo, had minor injuries, FHP reported in a press release.

The accident happened about 3:40 a.m. on U.S. 51 south of 136th Street in Suwannee County. Land was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado south when a deer appeared in the road. Land swerved and then overcorrected. The pickup overturned and hit a fence, FHP reported.

Land was cited by FHP for leaving the scene of an accident and failing to report the crash.
