Holiday closings

Residential curbside collection of solid waste, recycling and yard trash will not be collected on Thanksgiving Day.

On Friday, collection will resume for those with a Thursday pick-up day. For more information, visit www.gainesvillerecycles.com.

The five Alachua County Rural Collection Centers and the Leveda Brown Environmental Park and Transfer Station will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, but will reopen on Friday. However, the Hazardous Waste Center at Leveda Brown will be closed through Saturdaynut will reopen on Monday. The Waste Collection office also will be closed Thursday and Friday, but will reopen on Monday.

At Regional Transit System, there will be no bus or paratransit service on Thanksgiving Day, but weekend service will not be affected.

On Friday, RTS and paratransit service will be running a normal Sunday schedule, which means only Routes 1, 5, 8, 9, 11, 13, 15, 16, 20, 27 and 35 will be operating.

The Gainesville Post Office will be closed Thanksgiving Day and there will be no mail delivery.

Normal mail delivery and post office hours will resume on Friday.

Home repairs

Gainesville residents needing major home repairs may be eligible for free help through the Gainesville Housing Rehabilitation Program.

Applications are now available at the Housing Division office in the Thomas Center at 302 NE 6th Ave., Room 253. They will be accepted beginning Monday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday.

Assistance will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, with cases reviewed individually to determine eligibility. The program will address problems with roofing, windows, doors, electrical, plumbing and heating.

Toy drive

The Porters community is sponsoring a toy drive.

Any support is appreciated and all donations will be tax deductible. Toys and donations may be dropped off at the Porters Community Center at 512 SW 6th Ave.

Holiday choir

Help ring in the holidays with the Jingle Bell Choir.

Members are needed to learn and perform a holiday song. No experience is necessary. Performances will be held at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Dec. 1 and Dec. 15.

Football camp

Team FLA of the States Developmental Football League will host a free football camp for boys and girls ages 4-17.

Computer classes

The Santa Fe College Community Outreach and East Gainesville Instruction will offer free computer classes.

Classes are held at Library Partnership at 1130 NE 16th Ave. and Mount Carmel Baptist Church at 2505 NE 8th Ave. Space is limited to 10 each class.

On Dec. 1 at Mount Carmel, from 10-11:30 a.m., learn basic skills, and from 1-3 p.m., learn to manage and copy files and create folders.

Cane boil

The city of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs and the Friends of Nature Parks will present the annual Cane Boil & FiddleFest.

It will be held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at Morningside Nature Center at 3540 E. University Ave. Admission is $3 for ages 13 and older, $1 for ages 3-12 and free for children under 3.

Featured will be the making and bottling of sugar cane syrup, live roots music and costumed living history interpreters and demonstrators. From 10 a.m.-noon, the Longleaf Pine Youth Fiddle Contest will be held. Fiddlers are needed, so visit friendsofnatureparks.org.

Craft fest

Get ready for Craft Festival 2012.

It will be held from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday at the O'Connell Center on the University of Florida campus. Admission is $4 for adults, $1 for UF students with ID, and free for children 13 and under. Discount coupons are available at www.oconnellcenter.ufl.edu/craftfestival and also in local newspapers.

Featured will be more than 300 vendors with hand-made and unique items.

Mebane reunion

The A.L. Mebane High School Alumni Association Inc. will host its annual Homecoming Reunion.

It will be held Friday through Sunday. Events will be:
