The man whose body was found Tuesday afternoon outside a parking garage near Shands at the University of Florida has been identified as Michael M. Kronewitter, 54, of Gainesville, police said.
University of Florida Police Department Maj. Brad Barber said on Wednesday that a cause of death and the circumstances preceding the death had not yet been determined.
The department received a call around 1:30 p.m. from a person who discovered a body lying on the ground behind a parking garage on Southwest 13th Street near the Shands Cancer Hospital. Emergency workers responded and declared the man dead.
Barber said detectives continue to investigate.
"They continue to look at this as a death investigation where he had fallen from somewhere on that garage," Barber said. "They were not even able to track down next of kin until late last night."
Barber said he didn't know what floor of the garage Kronewitter had been on or whether any surveillance video from the garage shows Kronewitter.
Barber added he had no indication of whether Kronewitter had been in Shands or was going to Shands.
Kronewitter's car was found in the garage but Barber said detectives had not revealed what was in it.
An autopsy was scheduled for later Wednesday, Barber said, adding it might give an indication of whether Kronewitter had been using alcohol or drugs.
Police gave Kronewitter's address as 4830 NW 43rd St. However, an office employee at that complex said no one with that name was listed as a renter.
