Alachua County plans to relocate its fairgrounds and is requesting letters of interest from property owners for potential sites over the next few weeks.
People are invited to send in proposals for possible new locations for the fairgrounds and related facilities.
Eligible properties must be within these borders: Hawthorne Road to the south, the county line to the north and east, and to the west, the western right of way line of Waldo Road and County Road 225 extended out north to the county line, according to the county's bid package for applicants.
The site also must be at least 25 acres, which would provide enough space for various fairgrounds facilities, Alachua County Purchasing Manager Larry Sapp said.
The county is welcoming letters of interest so staff can see what options it has in selecting a location, he said.
People must submit their letters to the Alachua County Purchasing Department, located on the third floor of the Alachua County Administration Building at 12 SE First St., by Dec. 12 at 2 p.m.
The county wants this to be a competitive process, Economic Development Coordinator Edgar Campa-Palafox said.
The county will determine whether it will buy the new fairgrounds site, get it donated or enter into a long-term lease agreement during the negotiations process.
"It will be up to what proposals we get," Campa-Palafox said.
After the mid-December deadline for letters of interest passes, county staff will review the submissions and report to the Alachua County Commission in January, he said. After that, negotiations will begin and could last until March or later.
The fairgrounds is now located at 3100 NE 39th Ave. in Gainesville. The commission wants to redevelop this site as a business park.
