Alachua County high school marching bands had a strong showing at Saturday’s Kingdom of the Sun Marching Band Festival held at North Marion High School in Citra, where four schools placed in the top 10.

Results from Saturday's Kingdom of the Sun Marching Band Festival:

Grand Champion: Choctawhatchee High School (Fort Walton)
First Runner-up: Buchholz High School
Second Runner-up: Santa Fe High School
Gainesville High School placed fourth
P.K. Yonge placed sixth.

Alachua County high school bands heading to Saturday's state championship in St. Petersburg:

School, Classification
Newberry, 1-A
P.K. Yonge, 2-A
Santa Fe, 3-A
Gainesville High, 4-A
Buchholz, 4-A

Several area bands participated in the last regional competition of the season, where Buchholz’s Golden Regiment was first runner-up, Santa Fe’s Raider Regiment was second runner-up and Gainesville High’s Hurricane Marching Band placed fourth. P.K. Yonge’s Blue Wave Marching Band came in sixth place.

Alex Kaminsky, band director at Buchholz, said he felt proud of the Golden Regiment’s performance, calling it the strongest of the season.

“They put absolutely everything into the performance, and they were rewarded for it,” he said.

The Golden Regiment now holds the second-highest score in the state going into the state championship, behind only the Choctawhatchee Style Marchers of Choctawhatchee High School in Fort Walton — a 5-A band with about 200 students, or about 80 more than Buchholz — by nearly half a point.

“Obviously, I’m very encouraged about where we are right now,” Kaminsky said.

Alachua County will be well represented as five high school bands have qualified this year for the state championship semi-finals.

Newberry, P.K. Yonge, Santa Fe, Gainesville and Buchholz high schools join 83 other bands from throughout Florida in St. Petersburg this weekend to compete for a shot at the Florida Marching Band Coalition finals, which will be held Saturday at Tropicana Field.
