Police have released more details about a robbery that occurred Sunday night near the Steak ‘N Shake restaurant on Southwest 13th Street at 16th Avenue.

Gainesville Police Department spokesman Officer Ben Tobias said the victim was walking down Southwest 14th Street when a six-foot-tall black man in his 20s, wearing a dark green shirt and dark pants, walked up behind her, pushed her to the ground and demanded her money.

Tobias said the victim had recently been paid and gave the man $420.

The robber fled to the northeast. GPD Officer Jeff Kerkau and K-9 Nero tracked the suspect through Tipton Terrace Apartments, the Summit House apartments and the fence separating Holiday Garden Apartments from Summit House.

GPD did not locate the suspect, and the University of Florida Police Department sent out an alert because the crime was near campus.

Tobias said a witness called police and told them a man matching the description of the suspect had been loitering and begging for money in the parking lot of Summit House. The man told the witness he was diabetic, had just left the hospital and was just trying to get back to Ocala. He also told the witness he was going to Steak ‘N Shake.

Police searched the area but didn't find the suspect.

Anyone with information about the crime can contact GPD at 955-1818.
