The Picks: Big week for SEC

There will be no shortage of high drama with all of the big games being played Saturday, but the real drama seems to be taking place in Idaho.

You know, that hotbed of football controversy.

First, Idaho fired head coach Robb Akey after a 1-7 start. Then, Idaho State suspended coach Mike Kramer for pushing one of his players to the ground at a practice.

Must be something in the potatoes.

Those coaches have their issues, but back here in the real college football world Dr. Football should be asking for a contract extension.

Last week was a 9-1 record for The Picks and the overall mark of 60-20 is worthy of BCS bowl consideration. The goal here is not to go all Gene Chizik on you and have a collapse. This is a what-have-you-done-lately world and I'm just picking in it.

FLORIDA-GEORGIA: The big story this week was Georgia safety Shawn Williams calling out some of his teammates for being soft. “I think it woke some guys up,” said linebacker Jarvis Jones. The big question is whether or not it divided a struggling defense or brought it closer together. Either way, I'm not picking against a team that keeps finding unusual ways to win football games. Florida, 24-20.

MISSISSIPPI STATE AT ALABAMA: There are a lot of teams who are unbeaten that I'm still not sure about. Mississippi State is one of those teams. We find out more about them Saturday night. Alabama, 31-17.

NOTRE DAME AT OKLAHOMA: I have to stop picking against Notre Dame. Stop right now, Dr. Football. Uh, can I stop next week? Oklahoma, 27-20.

TENNESSEE AT SOUTH CAROLINA After facing LSU and Florida the last two weeks, Steve Spurrier must have loved watching video of Tennessee's defense this week. South Carolina, 34-24.

TEXAS TECH AT KANSAS STATE: I don't think there has ever been a Heisman Trophy winner named Collin. But it could happen this year. Kansas State, 30-21.

OLE MISS AT ARKANSAS: Have the Razorbacks rediscovered their mojo? We shall see. Arkansas, 27-19.

DUKE AT FLORIDA STATE: Usually, I wouldn't bother picking this game, but the job David Cutcliffe has done at Duke warrants an appearance in The Picks. Short-lived, but an appearance all the same. FSU, 35-16.

OHIO STATE AT PENN STATE: Think how big this game would be if either team was eligible for the Big Ten-ish Championship Game. Instead, it's the Bowl-Ban Bowl. Ohio State, 21-20.

TEXAS A&M AT AUBURN: Johnny Football was probably eliminated from the Heisman race last week. Auburn's defense won't be enough to get him back in it. But it will come close. Texas A&M, 31-14.

KENTUCKY AT MISSOURI: We're going to see one of these teams get its first SEC win. Actually, I wouldn't recommend watching it, but it's going to happen. Mizzou, 17-14.
