TALLAHASSEE — No. 12 Florida State snapped its 21-match losing streak to the Florida Gators as the Seminoles swept the No. 11 Gators, 25-23, 25-22, 25-21, to defeat Florida for the first time since Oct. 31, 1994. The Florida loss ends the Gators’ 14-match winning streak in 2012 and the 'Noles remain undefeated at Tully Gymnasium since August 26, 2011, taking 21 consecutive home contests. The Gators are now 17-3 on the season with all three losses coming to ranked opponents.
“I have to give all the credit to Florida State,” Florida head coach Mary Wise said. “They were the better team tonight.”
Florida was led by freshman Ziva Recek, who had her fourth double-double of her career with 16 kills and a career high-tying 15 digs. Senior right-side hitter Tangerine Wiggs and junior middle blocker Chloe Mann each turned in 10 kills on the night with Wiggs hitting a match-high .421, and Mann stuffed a match-high four blocks. Freshman outside hitter Gabby Mallette added seven kills.
The Gators surpassed the Seminoles in nearly every category, but Florida dug itself into holes too big to climb out of, having to overcome large deficits throughout the match to catch up to Florida State.
