UF roundup: Women swimmers finish third at SMU Classic

In the second meet of the season, the University of Florida women’s swimming and diving team finished third at the SMU Classic with 289 points. Taking first place at the meet was Southern California with 366 points, followed by North Carolina with 292.50 points.

The Gators won the final event of the weekend as they took first in the 200 free relay. The group of freshman Natalie Hinds , senior Jamie Bohunicky, Lindsey McKnight and Kaitlin Frehling finished with a time of 1:32.84.

Junior Elizabeth Beisel swam in two finals on the second night, earning third in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:45.55 and coming in second in the 200 IM in 1:59.69. Fellow junior Hilda Luthersdottir finished fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.08) and sophomore Rebecca Rainer came in eighth in a time of 2:16.55. Luthersdottir added a ninth place finish in the 200 IM, touching in at 2:03.51.

In the 200 backstroke, freshman Ashlee Linn swam her way to a third place finish in a time of 1:57.65, as Hinds was 10th in 2:02.79. McKnight and Frehling took fifth (50.85) and eighth (50.78) respectively in the 100 free. Bohunicky was fifth in the 200 free in a time of 2:02.11 and Rainer took 11th with a 2:03.88.

The divers competed on the three-meter board on night two, freshman Emily Mosher came in third for the Gators with a total score of 255.50.

Women's tennis: University of Florida junior Sofie Oyen and the Gator doubles team of Danielle Collins and Olivia Janowicz advanced at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships at the USF Varsity Courts on Saturday.

Florida had four competitors in the main draw of Saturday’s round of 16 matches and all pushed their opponents to three long sets, but only Oyen emerged on the winning side as she defeated Miami’s Melissa Molivar, 6-3, 0-6, 6-2.

Men's tennis: Two Florida men’s tennis players advanced to the quarterfinals of the Singles Main Draw on Saturday at the 2012 USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships in Tallahassee. One pair of Gators advanced to the semifinals of the Doubles Main Draw.

Senior Bob van Overbeek and junior Florent Diep advanced to the quarterfinals with two singles victories on Saturday. Senior Billy Federhofer lost in the round of 32. Sophomore Mike Alford and Diep paired together to advance to the semifinals of the Doubles Main Draw.

Alford and freshman Luke Johnson each won in the Consolation Draw round of 32, and Alford also won in the round of 16.

Play will continue tomorrow with the quarterfinals and semifinals in the Singles Main Draw and Singles Consolation Draw. The semifinals of the Doubles Draw will also be played on Saturday.
