Five questions with Vanderbilt junior defensive end Walker May
Q: How big was last week’s win over Missouri, coach James Franklin’s first on the road in the SEC?
A: It was awesome. It was a great atmosphere, fun game to play in. It was really good for the team, and we’re excited for it.
Q: Most of the players from last year’s narrow loss against Florida are back. What do you remember the most about that game?
A: I remember we fell behind in the first half a little bit, but then we rallied back and played a good game in the second half, so we just got to come out hitting on all cylinders for the first and second half this year.
Q: What’s impressed you about Florida running back Mike Gillislee?
A: He’s leading the SEC in rushing. That’s not typical. In the past, Florida’s been the passing offense and everything, so it’s cool to see them line up and run the ball. When you grow up and you think Florida, you think of throwing the ball around, so it’s a little different. He’s doing a great job running the ball, makes good cuts, follows his blockers. His offensive line is blocking well, so it’s going to be a challenge for us.
Q: Can you describe James Franklin’s approach to coaching and how he’s going about bringing Vanderbilt to prominence?
A: He does a great job with us. Great attitude every day at practice. He really keeps us going and motivates us for practice. That’s the most important thing. We always know we can talk to him about anything. He’s really great for the program, really great for us as players.
Q: What stands out to you about senior running back Zac Stacy?
A: He’s a heck of a weapon, man. Zac is awesome. He grew up just south of where I did in Alabama. He’s a great running back. He gets behind his pads sometimes. He’s put the boom on me a couple times.
