A Gainesville man was arrested early Tuesday morning on allegations that he beat his wife, causing a severely split lip, in front of their child.

Travaris Levall Godbolt, 27, of 1120 NW 45th Ave., was charged with domestic felony battery and child abuse, a Gainesville Police Department arrest report states.

The incident occurred about 1:30 a.m. when Godbolt's wife was in her van, according to the report and information from police. They were arguing by the side of the road over an electric bill when he is accused of reaching through the window and punching her in the face.

It caused a one-inch laceration in her lip that required stitches and will leave permanent disfigurement, the arrest report states.

Godbolt's wife got out of the van and attempted to call police, but he grabbed her cellphone and broke it by throwing it to the ground.

The arrest report also states that he tried several times to get in the van and drive off with their 2-year-old child.

Godbolt told police he may have “accidently struck” his wife's face.
