Florida has added a second walk-on to its roster — and it’s a familiar name.

Billy Donovan, son of Florida coach Billy Donovan, has joined the Gators as a walk-on and will wear uniform No. 42.

“I’m looking forward to contributing any way I can,” the younger Donovan said. “I’m excited to be a part of this team and to fill any role that helps make us better.”

The younger Donovan was a former standout at St. Francis High in Gainesville who scored more than 1,000 points in high school career. He spent the past two seasons at Division III Catholic University in Washington, D.C.

At Catholic last season, Donovan averaged 5.9 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. He started for Catholic last season in an exhibition game against the Gators at the O’Connell Center, scoring a team-high 13 points.

Donovan becomes the second walk-on on UF’s roster, joining Orlando native Jacob Kurtz. Under NCAA transfer rules, Donovan won’t be eligible to play in games this season, but can practice with the team. He’ll be able to appear on the floor for the Gators as a junior beginning in the 2013-14 season.

“It’s going to be great to have Billy here, both for our team and for our family,” said coach Donovan. “I always want to be supportive and put him in a position to succeed, and hope this will be a great experience for him.”
