A group of Gator fans assaulted four other Gator fans after the LSU game on Saturday.
According to Gainesville Police Department spokesman Ben Tobias, the assailants beat Joe Cappelletti, 28, of Gainesville until he blacked out. They also reportedly attacked three more people, including Cappelletti's fiancee, Jamie Davis, 25. All are from Gainesville.
Tobias said GPD is searching for the assailants, and even though there were plenty of witnesses to the attack, descriptions of the men are vague.
“GPD takes these incidents very seriously, and we will be following any leads that can lead us into the direction of these suspects,” he said.
According to Cappelletti, he was walking down West University Avenue near St. Augustine Church around 9:30 p.m. when two women and three men in a rickshaw pulled up. They started yelling at Cappelletti's group, and one pushed Davis. Cappelletti grabbed one of the men and they tussled and exchanged some words before everyone dispersed.
His group crossed the street, Cappelletti said, and the same three men jumped out of the bushes and attacked them.
“The thing that really got me is that they were all Gator fans,” he said. “They just looked like normal people who came to town to enjoy the game.”
Cappelletti said they grabbed him and punched and kicked him repeatedly in the face.
“I don't remember much,” he said, “but I remember trying to crawl under a Toyota Corolla to get away.”
Davis tried to pull off one of the men, and they ran off after the beating.
Police responded and found a pool of blood in the street, Tobias said, as well as Davis covered “head to toe” in her fiance's blood.
Cappelletti suffered a broken nose and numerous facial fractures, his friend Ryan Forbus, 26, suffered a cut to his eye and severe swelling on the left side of his face from repeated blows. The other victim was Danielle Feldman, 26.
Police described the suspects as follows: Suspect one is a white male in his early 20s wearing a white shirt and khaki shorts with light brown hair, and a goatee.
Suspect two is a white male, 6 feet tall with short hair and a goatee wearing a blue Gators shirt and khaki shorts.
Suspect three was wearing a white shirt. Suspect four is a white female in a blue and white striped shirt with curly brown hair. The final suspect is simply described as a white female.
Cappelletti said he feels lucky he survived the attack and that he has some facial reconstruction surgeries scheduled.
